Every year around this time, I repeat the same tradition: I stand in front of my closet, decide I have absolutely nothing to wear, and start shopping for sweaters. This year, plaid has caught my eye. Yes, I know what you’re thinking. The print brings to mind flannel button-ups, school uniforms, and lumberjack shirts. But I’ve been loving the way plaid sweaters are being styled lately, and after falling down a rabbit hole of different styles, I think I’ve found my next fall obsession.

The plaid catching my eye right now feels a lot less predictable than the versions I remember. I’m seeing fuzzy knits, brighter color combinations, and cropped silhouettes that give the classic print a fresh look. And with options ranging from oversized pullovers to fitted cardigans, there are plenty of ways to wear it beyond the usual jeans-and-sweater combination. I’d pair a colorful plaid knit with slouchy cargo pants or wear a softer, more muted version with a midi skirt and tall boots.
If you’re ready to try something different or just want to add a new print to your fall rotation, there’s a style here worth considering.
